Google is like an universe in internet world. Like every term used on internet, Google algorithm and Google penalties are also have a buzz specially for Digital Marketers. These two are not only terms but a world having many layers. The power of google Algo and Penalties have been experienced by many of us who are in online world, if you own a business website, and you are looking to gain good position in search rankings, you likely know what I’m talking about. While working as a digital marketer one must have the awareness of Google algorithm so that he can make his marketing effort in much better way. Penalties are never good for any business website as it affects the performance of the web portal and ultimately affects business through online platforms.

Basics of Google Algorithm

in simple terms it is a set of instructions aiming completion of a specific task or solving a problem. It gives a way to produce the expected result, inspite of the complexity of the task to be completed. There are many small updates which we see on regular basis. It gives a brief idea about how the things are going in Digital Marketing wold, what google is allowing and on what google can take action. Quality algorithms are applied by most of the search engines only at the moment of serving search results. These are also considered as the filters for good content and quality signals. There are cases where the influence of algorithms is perceived as ‘penalties’ when a webpage doesn’t fully meet all the quality standard, and Google’s algorithms rewards other better quality websites. As a result, users sees a decline in organic performance of the website. The reason behind this is drop in fair score of the website. The better the quality of the website, the better will be the performance. To understand the quality, i will share important content in my next blog which will make more clear for you about the website quality standard.

Penalties and Manual Actions

When the actions performed on a website and for the website meets the google guidelines then it is away from the penalties but if its not following the norms then it comes in reach of penalties and manual actions which is not cool for the business website as it affects the ranking/business performance through online channels. Manual actions are more problematic than google penalties as manual actions are result of unexpected things. Human are adaptive and hence have advantage over machines in terms of inferring context and intention.

Google algorithms vs manual actions(Comparison)

Algorithms                                                                                                     Manual Actions

– Aim at resurfacing value                                                                 – Aim at penalizing behavior

– Work at scale                                                                                   – Tackle specific scenarios

-  Dynamic                                                                                          – Static Manual + Semi-automated

– Fully automated                                                                               – Defined duration (expiration date)

– Undefined duration

Few questions must be answered before applying the manual actions:

  • Does the behavior have manipulative intent?
  • Is the behavior egregious enough?
  • Will the Manual Action yield impact?
  • What changes will the impact yield?
  • What am I penalizing (widespread or single behavior)?

How to overcome from manual actions?

Understanding the behavior triggered is the first step when your business portal has been hit with manual actions. Having an understanding of Google’s Technical and Quality Guidelines, helps in evaluating website against them. Almost any website can recover from penalties and manual actions as property is deemed unrecoverable, are extremely rare. Have through look at the Manual Actions view in Search Console, and then work your way from there.
